Family Birth Center Staff and Doctors Take Part in S.T.A.B.L.E. Program
The Family Birth Center staff and 80 percent of the physician staff have completed the S.T.A.B.L.E. program certification.

All hospitals providing labor and delivery services need to prepare for the resuscitation, stabilization, and transport of sick and/or premature infants. A uniform, simple, standardized process of care and comprehensive team approach can improve the infant’s overall stability, safety and outcome.

According to Dena Systma, Family Birth Center Director, S.T.A.B.L.E. is a program that goes beyond neonatal and resuscitation and focuses on the stabilization of a sick neonate. The stabilization may be in preparation for transport or in certain situations the infant may receive ongoing care at BCH. The doctors and nurses take a day-long course and have to pass a written test at the event. The class is taught by the Perinatal Outreach Education team from Blank/Iowa Methodist Medical Center; a NICU nurse and neonatologists provided the education. The participants are certified for two years. The participation this year was excellent, especially from the doctors.
