| It is true that certain risk factors for breast cancer are beyond a person’s control, such as family history and aging. Fortunately, researchers are finding that certain lifestyle choices may lower the risk. There are seven ways you can help lower your risk of breast cancer now.
By cutting the fat and choosing foods high in fiber, such as beans, bran, whole grains, fruits and green vegetables you will help reduce your chances of getting breast cancer.
Research also shows that obesity may be linked to breast cancer, especially for women over 50, so maintaining a healthy weight is important.
By remaining active, a study found that women who exercised at least four hours a week cut their breast cancer risk by 60%.
Another preventative measure is to limit alcoholic beverages. More than 40 studies have linked alcohol abuse to an increased risk of breast cancer.
You already know smoking causes lung cancer, but it also increases the risks of many other cancers. Smokers may be twice as likely to develop breast cancer as nonsmokers.
Do monthly self-exams and see your doctor regularly. Be sure to ask about having mammograms – when to start and how often to have one.
Talk with your doctor also if you are planning to take any estrogen-containing pill. Increased levels of estrogen are believed to play a role in breast cancer.
As always, talk with your doctor if you have any questions regarding your risk of getting breast cancer, or any other health concerns.
Boone County Hospital and the Boone Hy-Vee are providing a complimentary rose to everyone who has a mammogram at the Hospital during the month of October.
If you need to schedule a mammogram, please call the Boone County Hospital Radiology Department at 433-8160.
